Dear Parents,
With the end of the year rapidly approaching, please see the Joyce Kilmer School’s Summer Reading List below. The purpose of our summer reading program is to encourage students to become lifelong readers by building their independent reading skills in a fun and engaging way. Research indicates students who do not read over the course of the summertime run the risk of losing ground in their reading achievement. This can be prevented by reading throughout the summer. Reading is a great way to keep skills up over the summer months and, in most cases, to increase them.
Benefits of Summer Reading Programs:
Enhance Reading Skills: Phonics, Fluency, Spelling, Comprehension, Vocabulary
Ignite a Passion for Reading
Improve Self-Esteem
Tackle Summer Learning Loss
Strengthen Reading Comprehension
Boost Memory Skills
Students are required to read at least one book for their grade level. Please make sure that notes are taken about the characters, setting, plot and themes. This will help them with the mandatory project that will be assigned during the first few weeks of school in their Language Arts classes. Some reading selections will be available for students to borrow for the summer as noted below.
We welcome parent participation and involvement with our summer reading projects. Consider reading along with your child or have them read aloud to you in order to encourage literary discussions. Talk to your child about what he or she is reading. Ask questions. Encouraging summer reading is a fantastic way to keep your child's mind active over the summer while promoting a positive summer activity that can be done virtually anywhere at any time.
Use These Reading Strategies : Visualization, Making Connections, Retelling or Summarizing
The Milltown Library offers a variety of engaging children’s programs over the summer. Please visit this link for more information on upcoming events: Milltown Public Library
Sincerely,
Mr. Veit
