Weekly Update from Mr. Veit

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Good afternoon! We hope everyone is healthy and well! We have had a wonderful first week back with the students, and we have ironed out our movement challenges related to this week. After living next week, where we'll be moving during afternoon periods, the rest of our challenges related to this new schedule will be addressed and the students will be able to settle into our "current normal." As always, we appreciate your feedback and support as we know this is and continues to be challenging on so many fronts for all of us. As always, we continue to rise to the challenge as a MIlltown, and Joyce Kilmer family!

A few note headed into the long weekend:

1. Chromebook Chargers - Please have the students bring their Chromebook chargers to school with them each day. We had many instances this week of Chromebooks needing a charge during the day and this can easily be addressed if the students have their chargers with them in their computer bags.

2. Next Week - Next week (February 16th - 19th) we will be remaining in homeroom/period 1 through period 4, and moving to classes during periods 5/6 - 9. The teachers and office staff have assisted students in getting used to this, and will continue to do so next week.

3. Walking to School - If your children are walking to school, please encourage them to remain on cleared sidewalks and to refrain from coming across the recess field in back of the school.  Needless to say our school shoes/sneakers do not hold up well in the icy frozen over snow, and although tempting, it is not worth going through the day with wet socks!

4. Attendance Reminder - Please see the excerpt below from Dr. Brown to parents on October 29:
"Please be reminded that the district does not have an open enrollment policy and your child is required to register for either the hybrid model or the full remote option. Students registered in the hybrid model who remain home on their on-site day will be marked absent. There is no “work from home” option for students who are registered as hybrid and are not physically present in class on their scheduled on-site hybrid day. An advantage this year is that students may log into their classes on those days to keep up with work, if they are feeling well enough. But, district policy remains that students who are expected to report to school and are not present will be marked absent."
To add, if a student has signed in for the day, but does not attend any Google meets during that day, they will be marked absent.

5. Notification - Please be sure to notify the school nurse directly if your child is sick and in need of a COVID test. Notifying the teacher alone is not sufficient. That communication must also go to the school nurse.

6. Remote Day in the Event of Inclement Weather - Should we have a closure for weather, students will follow the early release schedule and meet with their teacher at the beginning of each class for a mini lesson/review of the day's assignments. Those assignments will already be posted  ahead of time in the event of tech or power issues. After the mini lesson/review of the day's assignment, students will begin working, and teachers will remain available during the class period for assistance should the students need. Depending on the class, and the needs of that class at that time, teachers may spend the entire class fully instructing. Afternoon sessions would continue as normal including office hours and 1 to 1 assistance.

As we continue to move forward, we want to remind you all of our commitment to the further examination of how to safely reintegrate our students to school, and to the expansion of the school day. We are in constant discussion regarding this topic, and we are monitoring all health related information and trends during the process.

As we continue to creep towards normality, we appreciate your patience and support!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Be well,
Mr. Veit
