Dancing Raisin Lab

Dancing Raisins


Focus Question:  What makes the raisins dance?

Prediction:   If ____________&_______ are added to the water, then the raisins will ____________ because ______________________________________________ (THINK …what scientific principle applies here).





Glass beaker

100 mL of water

2 graduated cylinders

30 mL of vinegar

4 raisins

1 teaspoon of baking soda

Graduated Cylinders





1. Use a graduated cylinder to measure the liquids.

2. Pour the water into the beaker.

3. Add all of the baking soda to the beaker.  – STIR thoroughly

4. Add raisins.

5. Add half (15mL) the vinegar.

6. Make observations for several minutes.

7. Add the remaining vinegar (15mL).

8. Make additional observations.


In your journal, record your observations on what you see happening in the beaker. Be as specific as possible.


Make a drawing showing the activity of the raisins in the solution.  Label the important parts.

RAFT: Re.ading Can Be Fun                                                                  I don't understand why people hate reading. It’s like TV in your head.


You’ve been hired by to blog about a “must read” Science nonfiction best seller that would appeal to middle school students.    After you submit your written analysis (Part I) you will prepare a 1-2 minute video as part of the blogs monthly book review.

  • Once, Part I is completed, then you will complete a 1-2 minute book review.   You may use a smartphone, iPad or borrow video equipment from me.   You will share this video with me through Google Drive.     *If you choose not to video, then you will be asked to present your book talk orally in class.

2). Construction Phase:    Choose your best design and process.   Build your design.  If you determine you need to redesign your solution – no problem.   Just sketch a new picture and revise your material list.


3). Testing Phase:  Test your design and process.   If it is unsuccessful, redesign and test again.   Continue until you are happy with your solution. You may watch other teams and observe how their different designs work.
