Instrumental Music Program at Joyce Kilmer School
Beginner Band is open to any student in their first year of instrumental music study. Since Joyce Kilmer School starts with 4th grade, this ensemble is primarily 4th graders, and they can choose to play flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone and tuba. 5th and 6th grade students may also choose to play the drums. Beginner Band meets on Tuesday mornings before school at 7:45 a.m., starting October 9. They will have lessons during the school day during Mondays and Tuesdays.
Knight Band is our intermediate ensemble, named after our school mascot. This ensemble is for students in their second year of studying an instrument, and is mostly 5th grade students. Knight Band meets on Wednesday mornings before school at 7:45 a.m., starting September 12. Their lessons will primarily on Wednesdays during the school day.
Concert Band is for our students who have previously played between 2-4 years, and is our most advanced group. Concert Band meets before school on Friday mornings at 7:45 a.m., starting on September 14. 6th grade students will have lessons during the day on Thursdays and 7th and 8th grade students will have lessons on Fridays during the school day. Students in this ensemble may opt to also participate in the JK Jazz Band, a fun ensemble that focuses on jazz and pop music sections. This band meets Monday mornings at 7;45 a.m., starting September 24.
